pH and the scalp
The skin’s surface and its natural, slightly acidic protective layer form an extremely important natural barrier against harmful environmental influences. At the same time, this protection keeps the skin microbiome in balance. Of course, all this also applies to the scalp, but the slightly acidic pH also protects the hair structure from drying out and damage.
All sebamed hair care products have a pH of 5.5 to optimally support the natural barrier function, the microbiome balance of the scalp and a healthy hair structure. From the Everyday Shampoo for daily hair washing to special anti-dandruff shampoos and the Dry Skin Urea Shampoo:
Balanced combinations of active ingredients have been tailored to specific needs, for:
- normal to dry hair
- oily and flaky scalp
- hereditary hair loss
pH and hair
A pH of 5.5 has a direct stabilising effect on the keratin structure of the hair. A higher pH leads to a rougher hair surface and a less stable structure. The hair loses its shine and smoothness, is harder to comb and dries out more easily.
Hair facts
- Each hair grows over a period of about 6 months, after which the hair root stops producing hair for about 3 months before a new hair begins to grow.
- Redheads have the fewest head hairs (80 000), while blondes have the most (150 000).
- Hair grows on average 0.3 mm per day, with Asian hair growing slightly faster and African hair a little more slowly.
- Hair can be between 0.04 mm fine and 1 mm thick.
- Straight hair has a round, curly hair an oval cross-section.
- A single hair can support up to 100 g of weight without tearing. An entire head of hair would be able to carry up to 10 tonnes. But not the scalp, of course.
Hair care FAQs

I wash my hair every day – can that damage it?
You are on the safe side with a mild shampoo with a pH of 5.5, e.g. sebamed Everyday Shampoo, because it is gentle on the scalp and the hair structure. Thanks to the slightly acidic pH, the hair does not swell, which means it is better protected against drying out and harmful environmental influences. However, there are a few tips you should bear in mind: It is better to choose water temperatures below 35 °C. Lather the hair only once during daily washing – and always rinse thoroughly afterwards. Dry it gently, without rubbing vigorously, using sharp-edged combs, intensive brushing while the hair is still wet and blow-drying too hot. If the hair still appears dull and lacklustre, a restructuring treatment with sebamed Dry Skin Care Shampoo will help.

I often have dandruff. Can I use anti-dandruff shampoos on a long-term basis?
Yes, mild, skin-friendly shampoos such as sebamed Anti-Dandruff Shampoo are safe to use over a longer period of time. The active ingredient piroctone olamine does not lose its effectiveness and is also very well tolerated by the skin. This has been confirmed with clinical tests of the shampoo. The particularly mild cleansing and active ingredients also ensure that the hair and scalp are neither dried out nor damaged. For daily hair washing, however, we recommend alternating the Anti-Dandruff Shampoo with the mild sebamed Everyday Shampoo.

How exactly can I recognise hair loss and what can I do about it?
Losing 80 to 100 hairs a day is completely normal. If hair loss significantly exceeds this value on a permanent basis, this may be due to stress, hormonal imbalances, an unbalanced diet or a hereditary predisposition, for example. To keep hair healthy and strong, the hair papillae and follicles need a constant supply of nutrients and oxygen – especially during the active growth phase. The hair papillae are surrounded by a dense network of fine blood vessels – the capillaries, which ensure the supply of nutrients. However, hormones, stress and external influences can reduce blood circulation in the scalp and therefore lead to reduced hair growth.
sebamed Anti-Hairloss Shampoo visibly reduces hair loss when used over several months.
It is suitable for daily hair washing and is extremely easy to use. Lather up the shampoo in the palm of your hand and gently massage into damp hair with your fingertips for 2 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and you’re done.
